A Better Brew:

Salt Spring Coffee Leads Canada’s First Regenerative Organic Certified Coffee Brand Movement

One Cup at a Time for a Sustainable Future

Salt Spring Coffee, a groundbreaking in ethical and sustainable coffee sources, proudly announces its latest milestone by becoming Canada’s first regenerative organic certified coffee brand. This achievement means that Salt Spring Coffee reinforces their long-standing commitment to sustainability, fair trade, and environmental stewardship, offering consumers a unique cup of coffee that regenerates the land and supports farming communities.

Regenerative Future is Our Commitment

As climate changes, coffee cultivation around the globe is being threatened by such drastic changes. Salt Spring coffee is taking action by investing in regenerative organic certification, this is a revolutionary approach that focuses on three main pillars, which are soil health, biodiversity, and social fairness. The shade-grown chemical-free and soil enrichment forming practices were adopted by Salt Spring coffee to ensure that every being contributes to A Healthy Planet and the prosperity of forming communities in British Columbia.

“Our mission has always been to create coffee that does more than just taste good, it needs to do good,” says Mickey McLeod, the co-founder of Salt Springs Coffee. “Regenerative Organic certification is actively restoring the ecosystem, improving soil health and ensuring that farmers receive fair wages. It’s a game changer for the coffee industry and a crucial step in the fight against climate change .”

Supporting Farmers from Bean to Mug

By 2050, the demand for coffee is expected to triple according to expectations of farmers, yet nearly only 50% of the world’s coffee growing land is at risk due to climate change. Salt Spring coffee is tackling the crisis by working directly with farmers who use only regenerative organic practices, many of whom were already employing the sustainable methods for generations.

In the spring of 2024, Salt Spring coffee launched its first ROC certificate Coffee Village trade in Canada, followed by the international expansion of the Summer 2024, where they introduced three additional ROC plans: Blue Heron, French roast, and Regan roast. This amplified their recognition across Canada, particularly in British Columbia.

“This certification is not just a fancy label, it is a promise to everybody,” says Mickey McLeod’s wife. “We are committed to long-term partnerships with farmers ensuring that every cup you take of Salt Spring coffee is supporting sustainable livelihoods and healthy ecosystems.”

A Legacy of Ethical Sourcing and Sustainability

Since 1996, when Salt Spring Coffee was founded, it has championed sustainability through fair trade partnerships, organic farming, and community investments. The fair trade from the company goes directly to the coffee growing communities, this is allowing farmers to reinvest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“Organic is about what you don’t do, which is avoiding symbolic inputs. Generative organic farming is about what you actively do by improving the soil, working with nature, and supporting biodiversity,” explains McLeod. “By choosing ROC Coffee all consumers are making a real impact one cup at a time.”
